About Us

Beginnings (1986)

The Sandy Rotary Club was organized in 1986. Several of its charter members went on to serve as club presidents and in other leadership roles. One was also a leader in the wider community, chairing the Sandy Chamber of Commerce board and serving as president of the Sandy City Honorary Colonels.

In its early years, the club met for lunch on Wednesdays at Willow Creek Country Club on Willow Creek Drive. A few years later, the meetings moved to Carver's Restaurant in Sandy.

Part of a long Utah tradition

Sandy Rotary joined a movement more than a century old in Utah. Businessman Wesley E. King founded the state's first Rotary club in Salt Lake City in 1911, just six years after Rotary began in Chicago.

Today Sandy is one of the clubs in Utah Rotary District 5420, which spans 44 Rotary clubs and 7 Rotaract clubs statewide.

Serving the rising generation

The club's mission is to impact its community in support of the rising generation, locally and around the world. Its current projects include:

  • RYLA – sponsoring Rotary Youth Leadership Awards for local youth
  • Utah Food Bank – volunteering with the food bank and its community outreach programs
  • Sandy Fire Department – setting up flags and serving a community breakfast
  • Book Blitz – a twice-yearly book drive for children in Canyons School District

Internationally, the club's "Rotary Shark Tank" initiative provides business training and mentorship to strengthen local economies across Africa. The club reports more than 100 businesses funded through the program. Every project must pass Rotary's Four-Way Test.

Fellowship and learning

Weekly meetings also give members a chance to learn about their own city. In 2024, the club toured Colonial Flag in Sandy, where members learned the symbolism behind Utah's new state flag.

Sandy Rotary today

Forty years after its founding, the club still meets every Wednesday, now at the Canyons School District Office, 9361 S 300 E, Sandy. Members gather for lunch, a guest speaker, and about an hour of fellowship. Some have come for decades and others are brand new, and you don't need to know anyone in the room to belong.

The club grew very well and reached a total of 34-36 members.Ā  It was always enjoyable to see new members get involved.Ā  We did service projects and other activities.Ā Ā  The members were usually business owners or officers in their companies.Ā

I met bankers and others with whom I did business from time to time.Ā  Rotary was a great connection point for service and friends.

After a few years, we moved the meetings to Carver’s Restaurant in Sandy.Ā  We stayed there until the COVID shutdown.

I find that I am a joiner, not a quitter, and I enjoy still being involved in Rotary.
